Founder of Standard Oil 1870 (which achieved control of 90% of US refineries by 1882). He founded the philanthropic Rockefeller Foundation 1913, to which his son John D(avison) Rockefeller Jr (1874-1960) devoted his life. The Rockefeller Centre in Manhattan, New York (which includes Radio City Music Hall), is the world's largest privately owned business and entertainment centre. The activities of the Standard Oil Trust led to an outcry against monopolies and the passing of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act of 1890. A lawsuit of 1892 prompted the dissolution of the trust, only for it to be refounded in 1899 as a holding company. In 1911, this was also declared illegal by the Supreme Court.
